Hiring Millennials: How Today's New Grads View Work

With more millennials joining the optometric workforce every year, there is a shroud of mystery on how this generation views work. Stereotypes regarding millennials as unmotivated and transient abound, and concerns arise when hiring millennials to practices. Numerous organizations have administered a variety of polls and surveys to try and better understand the millennial outlook on their careers. Results showed that—contrary to popular belief—millennials actually prioritize work and want a career that allows them to grow and to contribute to society.

While only 50% of millennials told Gallup that they expect to stay in their same job a year from now, 87% of millennials said that professional development is important in a job. An overwhelming majority (94%!) of millennials want to contribute to society, and over 50% of those surveyed in this study done by The Millennial Impact said that they would take a pay cut in order to find a job that aligns with their values. A majority (65%) stated that they would rather be full-time employees: unsurprising, when 82% of millennials prioritize their work!

This isn't just a question of a "work-life balance," it's also a question of vocations. Hence the rising importance of concepts like "company culture": between student debt, rising retirement ages, and the loss of faith in social security, millennials recognize that their workplace will be where they spend the majority of their time. Millennials, it turns out, are looking for work that's worth their time and energy, and once they find it, they're ready to go all out.

In sharp contrast to the popular stereotype of millennials as lazy or entitled, these results demonstrate that by hiring millennials, you'll be hiring applicants who are deeply invested in careers that offer them personal fulfillment and the chance to make a difference in the lives of others.
