Optometry co-management is becoming increasingly popular as optometrists have the capabilities and knowledge to manage a large variety of cases.

Building an optometry co-management network can be beneficial for your patients and your practice.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Patricia Fulmer, OD at Vision Expo West, and asked her to share some thoughts on optometry co-management and why it’s so important.

Co-management is important in optometry. These days, optometrists can manage a wide array of cases. Taking on an active role in co-management is a great way to ensure your patients are receiving the care that they need.

When you co-manage patients, you get to be a part of your patients care from start to finish. This co-management is not simply just about what procedures or tests you perform in pre and post-operative care, it is also about the information and education you share with your patient during that care.

Being involved in co-management also allows you to observe surgical outcomes and communicate with surgeons in the decision making process.

One of the most important things in optometry co-management is establishing a communication line between you and the surgeon.

This is critical both in regards to pre-operative care and post-operative care. You need to be confident that if there are problems post surgically, you can rely on your surgeon to help in the management and care of your patient. This level of trust is paramount in building your optometry co-management network.

Having good co-management process and procedures will also ensure your patient has the most comfortable experience possible.
