force one

Supply and Demand

There is a shortage of 29,000 FTE PTs or more and supply cannot meet a growing patient demand. While the number of new physical therapists is growing, even conservative estimates project that the supply will not meet demand until 2024 or beyond. (APTA, 2016)

FORCE TWO

More patients to treat

The population of individuals over 55 years of age will increase by 28% between 2010 and 2020. This means a larger patient demographic who will be focused on aging in place. (US Census Bureau, 2018)

FORCE THREE

Expansion of post-acute care and home health

Since 2013, post-acute care and particularly home health have expanded dramatically. As Medicaid expansion moves forward across the United States, this means an additional 4.3 to 4.7 million patients will be covered by insurance, many of whom will be eligible for rehab therapies. (Urban Institute, 2018)

FORCE FOUR

Attrition

There is a net increase of 8,000 PTs entering the workforce every year. However, with attrition rates as great as 3.5%, this ratio cannot support the subsequent increase in demand for physical therapy services. (APTA, 2016)
