Our Story

National Vision is one of the largest optical retailers in the United States. With every new team member and every new store opening, our Doctor of Optometry network – 2,200+ ODs strong – helps make quality eye care and eyewear more affordable and accessible. National Vision was originally founded in 1990 to operate a handful of Vision Centers for Walmart. Fast forward 30 years, and we now stand at over 1,200 stores across five retail brands, with a Doctor network comprised of 30+ independent practices. Our retail brands include America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, Eyeglass World, Vision Centers inside select Walmart stores, and Vista Opticals inside Fred Meyer stores and on select military bases.

We believe the Optometrist is the hero of primary eye care, safeguarding their patient’s ability to experience his or her best vision. For many of our patients, an Optometrist is the first point of contact into the healthcare system. The eyes offer a window into overall health, and thus this first touch point can be critical for patients getting the care they need for serious conditions.

Optometrists practicing in offices inside our locations are comprehensive primary eye care specialists. They often catch systemic issues, in addition to providing prescriptions for clearer vision. While contacts and eyeglasses prescriptions are extremely important, primary care is so much more. Our network of ODs report seeing a high amount of anterior and posterior segment pathology in their practices, and they manage ocular disease to their comfort level.

National Vision also invests in technology, and our network has access to high-quality equipment, including auto-phoropters, digital acuity charts, visual field screenings, auto-refractors and retinal cameras.
